The University of Minnesota Golden Gophers delivered a masterclass in hockey last night, shutting out the Minnesota State University-Mankato Mavericks with a resounding 5-0 victory at Lund Arena.
The Gophers dominated the game from the onset, hammering the Mavericks’ net with a total of 51 shots. The relentless offensive onslaught was too much for Mavericks goalie, Jack Hodgins, who managed to save 46 shots but couldn’t prevent the five goals that slipped past him.
On the other end of the ice, Gophers’ goalie, Owen Peterson, had a stellar night, stopping all 44 shots that came his way. His perfect performance contributed significantly to the Gophers’ shutout victory.
Keegan Johnson, wearing number 9 for the Gophers, emerged as a key playmaker with two assists, further cementing the Gophers’ dominance. On the Mavericks’ side, Owen Meyer, number 19, racked up two penalty minutes.
Despite having two powerplay opportunities each, both teams failed to capitalize, leaving the powerplay stats at 0/2 for both sides.
The Golden Gophers will be hoping to replicate this impressive performance in their next game, which will be a rematch against the Mavericks. This time, the Gophers will have the home advantage, playing at the 3M Arena at Mariucci on Wednesday, January 21.
Stay tuned for more exciting hockey action as we follow the Gophers’ journey through the season.
